Sustainability

We must all play our part in reducing CO2 emissions in order to slow down global warming. As the global market leader in lab-scale R&D workflows, we actively contribute to the development of technologies for a net zero future. In addition to this, we are continuously reducing our own emissions and are committed to shaping a sustainable future.

Our objective is to accelerate development of technologies for a net zero future.

As a leading partner for lab-scale R&D workflows, we help our customers develop innovations that reduce emissions worldwide.

Wolfram Stichert, Founder & CEO

Our products, solutions, and technologies help customers across the globe achieve their sustainability goals. For example, we deliver faster and better results in innovation projects when our customers are looking to enter the circular economy or switch their raw material base from fossil to renewable resources and CO2. We help customers develop new processes for production of hydrogen as a clean, sustainable energy source, as well as for converting CO2 into valuable products based on renewable energies. We optimize processes for customers who are looking to produce chemicals and fuels more efficiently.

Examples of sustainable innovations

We support companies and research institutions worldwide in the areas of carbon management, circular economy, hydrogen production and storage, battery materials, yet also in the efficient production of chemicals and fuels and the use of renewable raw materials.

CO2 Recycling

Dry reforming involves converting methane and CO2 into syngas in a reactor at high temperatures. With this process, large volumes of CO2 that are emitted during other production processes can actually be used as a raw material rather than simply being released. hte has supported BASF and Linde in the development of their DRYREF™ processes and SYNSPIRE™ catalysts here.

Biomass transformed into “green” nylon

Manufacturing high-grade products from renewable and recycled raw materials often requires new processes to be conceived. hte has developed a new catalytic process for DuPont, in which C5/C6 polyols obtained from biomass intermediates are converted into high-quality 1,6-hexanediol – an important monomer for polyamide 6.6, generally known as nylon.

Sustainable chlor-alkali value chain

Chemical companies need to make their production processes more efficient – and selecting a suitable catalyst can be decisive here. In a project for Hanwha Solutions, hte tested catalysts in a high-throughput process and also supported the Korean company in establishing a sustainable catalytic process in the chlor-alkali value chain.

Building and operating laboratory systems efficiently

As a manufacturing company, achieving net zero emissions is an ambitious goal for us. We are therefore working on many small and large adjustments as a way of continuously reducing our carbon footprint:

  • Lighting: Gradual switchover to energy-saving LED technology
  • Power generation: Installation of the first photovoltaic system on the roof of an hte building in 2024; second system currently in planning
  • Gas network: Extensive leak detection and minimization of consumption
  • Compressed air: Reduction in the necessary pressure level in order to reduce the power consumption associated with compressed air generation
  • Ventilation: Optimization of pipe routing, modernization of heat exchangers and automated day/night/weekend adjustment of laboratory temperature; laboratory exhaust systems in energy-saving mode at night
  • Buildings: Densification and modernization of existing buildings in order to achieve significant energy and CO2 savings over new buildings
  • System operation: Regular checks to determine which systems can be switched over to standstill mode
  • Analysis of electricity consumption: Installation of additional sensors and meters to better understand consumption; identification of further potential savings, and measures
  • Air conditioning: Use of a thermal imaging camera to examine test setups and infrastructure facilities for waste heat; re-insulation where prudent in order to optimize the air conditioning system

Procuring components and raw materials responsibly

We systematically implement standards, guidelines, and legislation relating to occupational safety, health and environmental protection, labor and human rights, as well as responsible corporate governance in close cooperation with experts from BASF. By establishing long-term, trusting partnerships with suppliers and specifically selecting regionally produced components, our Purchasing department contributes to our corporate responsibility.

ESG standards

We have implemented the German Supply Chain Act (LkSG) at hte. Accordingly, we also expect our suppliers and subcontractors to comply with these ESG standards in the same way.

Regionality

Most of the components we use when building systems are sourced from regional suppliers within a 150 kilometer radius of Heidelberg.

Taking responsibility for people

At hte, we believe that sustainability also means assuming social responsibility – towards our employees, future generations, and also the people in the region where we operate.

Principles

Our code of conduct serves as a framework for our actions at hte. It commits us to comply with legal regulations and ethical principles. We consistently implement standards and guidelines relating to equality and equal treatment, labor law, working conditions, social standards, and health protection.

Commitment

We provide targeted support to associations and initiatives in the area around Heidelberg, where hte is based. These include the “Kinderhilfe” children’s aid association and also food banks.

Diversity

People with different professional and personal backgrounds work at hte. We see added value in this and actively cultivate a diverse corporate culture.

Working environment

At hte, we place great emphasis on keeping employees satisfied. We strive for a good balance between professional and private life, while also promoting continuous personal development.
